Electronic Beowulf SupplementThe Electronic Beowulf Supplement provides access to digital facsimiles of Vitellius A. xv, including images of the Beowulf manuscript, in two different settings: as Facing Pages, as they naturally appear in the codex; and as a Sheet Collation, reconstructing the sheets of the original gatherings or quires. ![]() Open the Supplement in the same way as the Electronic Beowulf, by clicking the word OPEN on the spine of the book. The first screen opens with this guide in the main frame and a navigation menu in the left frame. ![]()
Under GUIDE are buttons for accessing at any time a comprehensive 'Help Index,' the 'Primary Guide' to Electronic Beowulf, a guide to this 'Supplement,' and an 'Overview' of texts. Navigation Menu Under SETTINGS, select either 'Facing Pages' or 'Sheet Collation.' The button for the chosen option will appear darker than the other button. ![]() Next select a text under SOUTHWICK CODEX or NOWELL CODEX (view 'Prefixed Leaves' in 'Facing Pages' only). For a brief introduction to the texts, see Overview of Texts. ![]() After a text is clicked, buttons appear beneath it with folio ranges identifying its quire or quires. ![]() Click a button to open a diagram of the quire and thumbnails of the folios comprising it. The left-frame menu is replaced by a pop-up menu that can be resized or minimized to make space for the display. To retrieve it, click the 'Menu' button in the upper left corner of the display. ![]() In some instances, texts and quires overlap. For example, the first six folios of the second quire of Nowell Codex, fols. 101-106, contain the last three leaves of 'Wonders of the East' (fols. 101-103) and the first three leaves of 'Alexander's Letter' (fols. 104-106).
In this case the button under 'Wonders of the East' notes the end of the text: ![]() ![]() The button under 'Alexander's Letter' gives the same folio range for the quire, but notes the beginning of its text. For more information, see Manuscript Foliation. |
