Frequently Asked Question about RTIME:

Q. What is rtime?

A. rtime is an application which queries the time on a remote NT computer.

Q. How does rtime work?

A..rtime works by using the lan manager netapi. It issues a NetRemoteTOD call through the NT operating system.

Q. Why won't rtime work under Windows 95?

A. The netapi is unsupported by Microsoft under Windows 95 or CE. It also will not work with versions of NT prior to 3.1.

Q. Why do I get an "Access denied" message when I try to query the time on some servers?

A. You must be authenticated on the server or NT computer that you want to query for the time. Authentication can be accomplished in several ways. The simplest way is to map a drive to the target machine. This will require you to furnish your ID and password on that computer. Authentication is less of an issue if your NT workstation is a member of the same NT Domain as the target machine. That way you are authenticated when you log into your own workstation and don't have to log in individually to the computer you want to query for the time.

Q. Are any special access rights required on the target machine to query it for the time?

A. According to the Microsoft documentation for NetRemoteTOD, no special rights are required to query a computer for the time of day. However, you must be authenticated (see the previous question).

Q. How is rtime licensed?

A. rtime is free as long as you distribute it in its original form with all copyright notices intact. It is one of several utilities that I have written as an exercise and to help me solve problems at work. It is my hope that you'll find it useful.
