Singletary Signature Series 2009/10

The Singletary Center for the Arts continues its commitment to a 30 year community tradition of presenting world-acclaimed artists through its own series which presents and stages concerts by renowned musicians, dancers, and ensembles from every corner of the globe.  As of today, the Singletary Signature Series 2009/10 will include the following (please check back for additional performances):

Bettye LaVette

September 26. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

One of America's most electrifying and enduring vocalists; recently featured in 2008 Kennedy Center Awards, she has become a musical stylist with few rivals. Recent performances include a Radio City Music Hall concert with Sir Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Eddie Vedder. And extraordinary combination of raw emotion and sublime musical intelligence enhances a voice hinting at decades of disappointment and endurance. Alltech Festival Event.

The Decemberists

October 6. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

The band's fifth album, The Hazards of Love, represents the most glorious kind of messing around. It's the most ambitious and most accomplished project to date from the Portland-based quintet of Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query,and John Moen-a full-length song cycle rooted in ancient language and imagery, yet entirely modern and accessible. The follow-up to the group's 2006 breakthrough, The Crane Wife (which NPR listeners voted their favorite album of the year), The Hazards of Love solidifies the Decemberists' standing as one of the most innovative and important creative forces in music today.

The Virsky Ukranian Dance Company

October 27. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

The renowned folk dance ensemble names after Pavlo Virsky is famous for its bright colors, the unity of content and form and the vivid embodiment of its stage concept. The ensemble's diverse concert programs presenting the exquisite charm of Ukrainian folk dancing and the wealth of its traditions have been warmly received by audiences all over the world.

Jean Luc-Ponty

November 14. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.
Ponty is a French virtuoso violinist and jazz composer. At sixteen, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, graduating two years later with the institution's highest award, Premier Prix. A growing interest in the jazz sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane compelled him to take up the tenor saxophone. Fueled by an all-encompassing creative passion, Jean-Luc soon felt the need to express his jazz voice through his main instrument, the violin.

Joe Lovano

January 30, 2010. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.
A post bop, jazz saxophonist, alto clarinetist, flautist, and drummer, Lovano has been one of the world's premiere tenor saxophone players, earning a Grammy award and several nods on Down Beat magazine's critics' and readers' polls. A jazz artist on the international level, his live work, "Quartets", garnered the "Jazz Album of the Year" award. Sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center.

Moscow State Radio Symphony

February 5, 2010. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.
The renowned orchestra is dedicated to the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries and performs weekly for millions of Russians throughout its radio broadcast. The orchestra has performed at major venues throughout the world and garners the highest praise from classical music critics. Alexander Sinchuk, 1st Prize Winner of the 2009 Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, will be joining the Orchestra.

Sarah Chang, Violin, with UK Symphony Orchestra

February 20, 2010. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

One of the most remarkable prodigies of any generation, violinist Sarah Chang has matured into a young artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional range continue to astonish. Appearing in the music capitals of Asia, Europe and the Americas, she has collaborated with the symphony orchestras of Philadelphia. Chicago, Boston, Cleveland, the philharmonics of New York, Berlin and Vienna, the principal London orchestras, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, among others.

Swan Lake by Moscow Festival Ballet

March 6, 2010. 7:30p.m. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Founded as a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies, this group offers a full-length production of Tchaikovsky's classic designed especially for SCFA.

Lexington Philharmonic 2009-10 MasterClassics Series

See and hear internationally acclaimed guest artists as Scott Terrell takes the baton for his first season!  All concerts are Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Singletary Center for the Arts. Subscription tickets are available for all 7 concerts, or pick your own package of 4 or 6 concerts. Opening Gala with Dame Evelyn Glennie, Percussion

September 25. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Scott Terrell takes the Singletary podium for his first MasterClassics concert as Music Director of the Lexington Philharmonic! Watch in awe as the most successful percussion soloist in the world plays a tour de force concerto by Joseph Schwantner. Two festive overtures by Brahms and Dvorak bookend this gala event. Program: Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80; Joseph Schwantner: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra; Vivaldi: Piccolo Concerto C Major; Dvorak: Carnival Overture, Op. 95

Joshua Roman, Cello

October 16. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Drum roll, please! Hear drum-inspired works of Mozart and Haydn surrounding the virtuosic Rococco Variations of Tchaikovsky, performed by a “Classical Rock Star,” cellist Joshua Roman. Roman was recently featured with the online phenomenon of the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Program: Mozart: Serenade for Orchestra No. 6 in D major K. 239, “Serenata Notturna”; Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme; Arensky: Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Op. 35a; Haydn: Symphony No. 103 in E-flat Major, “Drum Roll.”

Joyce Yang, Piano

November 13. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Joyce Yang received the silver medal at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at just 19 years old, and she will perform one of Beethoven’s greatest piano concertos with our orchestra! Also hear cinematic influences in the Much Ado About Nothing Suite by early film composer, Korngold, and Mozart’s joyous tribute to the great city of Prague. Program: Korngold: Much Ado About Nothing, Op. 11; Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in c minor, Op. 37; Mozart: Symphony No. 38 in D Major, K. 504, “Prague.”

Handel's Messiah

A holiday classic, and a Lexington tradition! With guest conductor Jefferson Johnson, the Lexington Singers, and guest soloists. Program: Handel: Messiah.

Esther Heideman, Soprano

January 22, 2010. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Hearken back to a simpler time of Americana as Metropolitan Opera star Esther Heideman sings the beautiful and nostalgic song cycle Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Listen for its influence in John Corigliano’s Elegy, which was inspired by Barber. Program: John Corigliano: Elegy for Orchestra; Barber: Knoxville: Summer of 1915; Beethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36.

Arnaud Sussman, Violin

February 12, 2010. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Arnaud Sussman will perform one of the pillars of violin concertos, while the orchestra takes center stage with a pillar of the Orchestral repertoire. American composer Robert Beaser jump starts this concert with the bluegrass and country music influenced Folk Songs, in its Lexington premiere. Program: Robert Beaser: Folk Songs; Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in g minor, Op. 26; Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73.

Anne-Marie McDermott, Piano

March 5, 2010. 8:00p.m. [Inside the Score (formerly Concert Previews) begins at 7:15p.m.]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

Anne-Marie McDermott performs over 100 concerts per year, and frequently collaborates with violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (who performs with the Lexington Philharmonic at a special concert in April). She performs the thrillingly virtuosic Piano Concerto in G Major, which Ravel wrote in homage to Mozart. Rounding out this program of tributes: a Dvorak serenade honoring his homeland, and Mendelssohn’s symphony dedicated to Italy. Program: Dvorak: Serenade for Winds in d minor, Op. 44; Ravel: Piano Concerto in G Major; Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, “Italian.”

Lexington Philharmonic 2009-10 Family Series

A wonderful family outing, these themed concerts are entertaining and interactive!  What better way to introduce children and adults to classical music in about an hour? Youth Arts Day

October 25. 3:00p.m. [Pre-concert games and activities begin at 2:00pm in the lobby]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

The Lexington Philharmonic is very excited to announce a side-by-side concert!  The musicians of the Philharmonic will be performing with members of the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras at this Youth Arts Day extravaganza!  You can also expect special appearances by young dancers and singers from the community, and displays of artwork from students in the area.

Candy Cane Concert

December 13. 3:00p.m. [Pre-concert games and activities begin at 2:00pm in the lobby]. Singletary Center for the Arts - Concert Hall.

The holiday tradition continues as guest conductor Ryan Shirar and the Diana Evans Dancers return to share the stage with the Lexington Philharmonic for an unforgettable Candy Cane experience!  This USO-themed concert includes great dancing and wonderful holiday music that will get your toes tapping with holiday cheer!

Ongoing: Scents of Style: Selections from the Sprague Perfume Bottle Collection

Ongoing: The Art Museum collection includes European and American artwork ranging from Old Masters to contemporary, as well as a selection of non-Western objects. Featured artists include Alexander Calder, Agostino Carracci, Jean Dubuffet, Sam Gilliam, Louise Nevelson, and Gilbert Stuart, among others. The private collection is always free to visitors.

Kentucky Folk: Art from the UK HealthCare Collection

July 11–September 20, UK Art Museum, general-$8; senior-$5; UK students/faculty/staff/alumni-free

The Art Museum at the University of Kentucky is partnering with UK HealthCare to debut Kentucky Folk; a collection of more than eighty works from some of the state’s best loved artists -- among them Minnie Adkins, Edgar Tolson, Linvel Barker, Charles Kinney, and many more.  These whimsical sculptures, hand-crafted walking sticks, and expressive paintings are destined for a home in the UK Chandler Hospital and related facilities when construction is complete.  Come to see this wonderful collection assembled by the Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead University.  For more information call 859-257-5716.

Kentucky Women Writers Conference

September 10-12.

There are so many ways to become involved with the Kentucky Women Writers Conference, and foremost among them is simply to attend the Conference in Lexington.  The Kentucky Women Writers Conference is the longest running literary festival of women in the nation. An annual event launched by the University of Kentucky in 1979, it has become a premier destination for the celebration of women's arts and letters.

WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

MUSE (Museum Support to Educators) Workshop African Art Then and Now

August 15, 10 a.m-4 p.m., UK Art Museum, $20

A workshop introducing African art to teachers of all grade levels: West African art will be the focus of this back-to-school workshop.  Educators will experience the arts of Ghana the neighboring regions through presentations, and try hands-on activities which introduce authentic textiles, jewelry, metalwork and other culturally significant items. An extensive display of images will inspire new lessons, and you will receive teaching resources for meaningful classroom lessons.  Participants receive resource materials and a certificate of attendance for professional development hours.
