Power Hour Schedule

The Power Hour is a weekly workshop for students on a variety of student success strategies related to Multimodal Communication and Study Strategies held on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in B24 and Wednesday 6:00-7:00 p.m in B110 WTY Library.
Please see the attached schedule for location and times offered.  

 

** Please note that students will not be admitted into Power Hours later than five minutes past the starting time.

September 26 Succeeding in a Large Lecture

Best practices for note taking, using technology effectively, avoiding procrastination, & tips on forming successful study groups.

 

October 3 Effective Note Taking

This workshop is a great opportunity to apply note taking strategies to your class.  Students will work through several examples with the facilitator and review skills related to organization.

 

October 10 Critical Reading

Critical reading takes a reader beyond recognizing what a text says and simply restating it to actively recognizing and analyzing evidence upon a page. Particular emphasis will be paid to critical reading within digital texts.

 

October 17 Exam Prep & Test Anxiety

Make exam prep less stressful and more productive by including these helpful strategies into your life.

 

October 24 The Writing Process

Avoid desperately staring at a blank screen the night before a paper is due! This hour will teach a process for managing the paper writing process, efficient research tips, and source citations.

 

October 31 Effective Speech Delivery 

Taking a great paper and turning it into a great speech is challenging, but we will take the mystery out of it for you!

 

November 7 Presentational Aids & Slide Design

Make your power point be the envy of your classmates and professor! This Power Hour will cover best practices in design, content, and integrating your presentation aid effectively within your presentation.

 

November 14 The Writing Process

September 27 Undergraduate Research: What You Do When You Don’t Know What You’re Doing presented by Undergraduate Research

This session is going to dive in to the common misconception of undergraduate research, how to find research opportunities at UK, and the funding available to students doing research. The goal is for you to leave the session feeling inspired, empowered, and prepared to go out and create new knowledge.

 

October 4 Citations & Style: Exploring Writing Guidelines presented by Student Support Services

Citation is not a ticket!  It and other elements are part of writing the term paper.  Come hear about Writing the Essay and How to paraphrase, summarize and cite, etc. with an interactive approach.

 

October 11 Seek & Find: Uncovering Common Errors in Writing presented by Student Support Services

When your paper is due, do you panic?  Concerned the instructor will uncover technical errors?  We will be discussing the top errors students make when writing.  Discover ways to identify and correct before you turn it in to the professor. 

 

October 18 Digital Video 101-Basic Techniques for Video Recording presented by Media Depot

The presentation will include basic camera, lighting and audio recording techniques. It will touch on basic editing tools and workflows for properly building a multimedia project working towards a final video that can be shared with an instructor. The presentation will also include information about story boarding, script writing, and tips for actors. There will be demonstrations of the equipment and proper techniques.
