Not all students are required to take an English/writing placement test. For example, if your ACT English subscore is 18 or higher, please just plan to consult with your advisor on which classes will be appropriate for you.
Students who have an ACT English subscore of below 18 (or SAT below 430 in English/Writing) are required to take an English/writing placement test. This untimed test is administered online via the COMPASS testing system. There are several options regarding when/where students can take this test:
Students can take the test remotely at a testing site in their own hometown. Click here for more information and to request a remote test.
Students may register for a day and time here to take the test in room B108A at the WT Young Library. Please make sure that you have your UK Student ID number and photo ID available when you come to any placement test!
Students must score 72 or above on the COMPASS test to demonstrate readiness for credit-bearing coursework. (For example, Composition and Communication courses: WRD & CIS)
