Students

Major problems, such as mountain top removal, coal slurry pond failures, rural health care delivery, and economic underdevelopment are of profound concern to the residents of Kentucky, especially those living in affected areas such as Appalachia. At the same time, three populations of students— young women, African Americans, and those from Appalachia—are seriously underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. This confluence of problems and underrepresented students creates an imperative to develop programs that will encourage and support these students to major in the STEM disciplines, which will enable them to return to their communities and become positive contributors to the solutions of the problems.

In furtherance of its mission, the University of Kentucky has been dedicated to identifying, supporting, educating, and graduating students from the traditionally underserved populations of the Commonwealth, especially Appalachian and minority students. Given this clear commitment, and the array of special programs already in place at UK, there is the opportunity and foundation for a broad, coordinated effort to recruit, retain, and graduate undergraduates from Appalachia and other Minorities who intend to or are currently majoring in STEM disciplines. That is the mission of AMSTEMM.

There are currently 383 students enrolled in AMSTEMM.

  • 165 are first-year students
  • 96 are second-year students
  • 83 are third-year students
  • 36 are fourth-year students
  • 70% are Appalachian
  • 26% are Minority
  • 4% are both Appalachian and Minority
