Charles
H. Wesley Prize
Dr. Charles H. Wesley was a noted African American
historian, educator, and minister. Born in Louisville, Kentucky,
Wesley was the third African American to receive his doctorate from
Harvard. He served as president of the Association for the Study
of Negro Life and History from 1950-1965 and as executive director
for the next twelve years. Wesley wrote several articles and books
on the African American experience including The History of Alpha
Phi Alpha published in 1953. Besides serving as a pioneer in the
study of African Americans, Wesley was president of Wilberforce
University from 1942 to 1947 and president of Central State College
of Ohio from 1947 to 1965.
In honor of Wesley’s early commitment to the
study of the black experience, AASRP seeks to recognize the best
graduate and undergraduate research paper written on an African
or African American Studies topic at the University of Kentucky
during the 2003-2004 regular term. Each paper should be typed, double-spaced,
and a minimum of five pages in length.
Students and or faculty are encouraged to submit outstanding
course papers to the AASRP office throughout the fall and spring
semesters. Deadline for submissions is April 2. The two winners
will be recognized with a certificate and monetary prize at the
Lyman T. Johnson Awards Banquet.
