GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS
VISITING THE
U.K. W.S. WEBB MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY

Welcome to the William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology! For many primary and
secondary school students, this field trip will be their first experience on a college campus. This is
an academic environment which must be respected. Teachers can help significantly by impressing
upon students prior to the visit that the university community is similar to a small city. Well over
30,000 people occupy the UK campus daily during the school year, including many handicapped
students as well as older scholars aged 60-90.

All visiting groups must STRICTLY OBSERVE the regulations listed below:

a) The Museum exhibit areas are located adjacent to the Department of Anthropology offices
and classrooms in Lafferty Hall. Visiting groups awaiting a tour SHOULD NOT congregate in the
Museum lobby or hallways because the noise is disruptive to University classes meeting in nearby
classrooms. Groups SHOULD NOT congregate in the area immediately outside the entrance, to
avoid blocking University student access to the building. Groups must enter Lafferty Hall by the
Front Door Only. Do not use other entrances into classroom/office areas. Visiting groups should
quietly form a single line in the lobby area for general announcements/ instructions to their groups.

b) The Museum staff expect that control of students will be strictly maintained by the
teachers inside the Museum, the lobby area, and immediately outside the building. The Museum
requires one adult leader for every 10-12 students, as do other University units that regularly host
student tour groups. Please follow the directions of the Museum staff regarding control of your
students.

c) NO FOOD OR DRINKS in Museum exhibit areas or the lobby (no candy, no chewing
gum, no soft drinks, etc.) NO RUNNING INSIDE THE BUILDING or on sidewalks. REMEMBER
we have classes in session all day long. The water fountain and bathrooms are located beyond the
Museum lobby on the left side of the hallway leading to the Department offices. Museum visitors
may use these facilities, but one teacher or other adult monitor must accompany each pair of
students.

d) Appropriate teacher preparation is necessary prior to a visit to the Museum so that the
students will know what to expect upon arrival. Loud or unruly groups WILL BE ASKED TO
LEAVE THE MUSEUM before their tour is completed.

We ask you to observe these regulations in order to give your students the best possible Museum
experience. Since other teachers, adult leaders, or parents will accompany students and assist in
control of your group, please pass copies of this notice along to each of them. Thank you.

GUIDELINES FOR OTHER UK TOURS

MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY TOURS: If your group exceeds 30-35, two or more adults must
be scheduled to accommodate people in the Museum as we are a small facility and group size is
controlled by firecode law. Additionally, a better learning experience can be gained by smaller groups
of children. Display cases are about five feet in width and large groups cannot view them easily. If
bringing two or more classes, alternate tours must be planned while one is in progress in our Museum
(as in most other units also). School groups are not permitted to congregate in halls or at building
entrances while awaiting their individual visit. To schedule one of the following tours, make those
reservations personally as visiting groups must make special arrangements with the individual
campus units prior to a visit. If on campus for the day, teachers can make use of several facilities
