Pronunciation II for Non-Native Speakers
Topics in American Culture: Part I and II

Session I: June 2 - June 30, 2009Session II: July 7 - July 30, 2009

The Center for English as a Second Language at the University of Kentucky will teach three specialty classes to advanced non-native speakers of English in Summer 2009. If the times do not fit your schedules, please let us know. We will try to accommodate schedules, if possible. Other classes may be announced later in this summer.

Oddities in Advanced Grammar: Prepositions and Articles

Wednesday: 5:30 - 6:45 pm
  Room: TBA (To be announced)

The course is designed for advanced non-native speakers of English who have a good foundation in English grammar but would like to finally master two of its finer points: prepositions and articles. These are the points that plague otherwise proficient non-native speakers of English. This class will involve much repetition and memorization. It is not for the faint of heart or those wishing to have an enjoyable time speaking English. This is hard, but rewarding work. A text may be required.

Cost: $135 (6 weeks) Instructor: L. Abolins

Pronunciation II for Non-Native Speakers

Tuesday & Thursday: 6:00 - 8:15 pm Room: TBA (To be announced)

The class will concentrate on both pronunciation and intonation, with the intention of making participants more comprehensible to their students, peers, clients, and co-workers. One session will be devoted to a diagnostic test to determine individual problem areas in pronunciation. Participants will be asked to make audio and video recordings to provide better feedback on each participant’s special needs. Students will also be encouraged to make presentations. Primary emphasis will be on suprasegmentals, intonation and timing. The class will use the last half of the text sound concepts. Participants will be required to buy a text book. Please contact the teacher if the times do not work for you.

If the Participants have not taken Pronunciation Part 1 at the University of Kentucky, they will be asked to purchase the text sound concepts w/CDs and work through the first half of text by themselves before entering the class. Some review of the main concepts will take place in the first classes.

Cost: $270 (4 weeks) Instructor: L. Abolins

Note: The Pronunciation class is usually taught in 6 weeks. The 4 week program, will exactly have the same amount of time devoted with each class period extending by 50%
