The Center for English as a Second Language at the University of Kentucky will teach three specialty classes to advanced non-native speakers of English in Fall 2009. If the times do not fit your schedules, please let us know. We will try to accommodate schedules, if possible.

Session I: Pronunciation for Non-Native Speakers of English, Part I

Tuesday & Thursday Time  : 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
Postponed Room :  POT 110 (Patterson Office Tower)

The class will concentrate on both pronunciation and intonation, with the intention of making participants more comprehensible to their students, peers, clients, and co-workers. A diagnostic test will be administered to all participants to determine their individual problem areas in pronunciation. Participants will be asked to make audio/video recordings to provide better feedback on each participant’s special needs. Participants will also be encouraged to make presentations. A textbook will be required.

Cost:  $270 (6 weeks) Instructor: L . Abolins

Session I & II: Professional Writing

Session I: Postponed Session II: Postponed
Monday & Wednesday Time : 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm
Room: TBA (To be announced)

This is an advanced writing course for non-native speakers of English designed to introduce them to writing conventions in various professional contexts. The students develop both their knowledge of appropriate content and organization as well as of sentence-level grammatical accuracy. The course content will attempt to reflect and respond to the needs of the participants. Participants should be prepared to present a typical piece of their writing to the instructor before the class begins. All assignments will be submitted electronically. Participants will need regular access to the internet and will be required to buy a textbook.

Cost: $270 (6 weeks) Instructor: TBA

Session II: Oddities in Advanced Grammar: Prepositions & Articles

Wednesday Time  : 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm
Postponed Room :  POT 112 (Patterson Office Tower)

The course is designed for advanced non-native speakers of English who have a good foundation in English grammar but would like to finally master two of its finer points: prepositions and articles. These are the points that plague otherwise proficient non-native speakers of English. This class will involve much repetition and memorization. It is not for the faint of heart or those wishing to have an enjoyable time speaking English. This is hard, but rewarding work. A text may be required.

Cost: $145 (6 weeks) Instructor: L . Abolins

All sections are open to University of Kentucky faculty, graduate students, researchers, post docs and advanced English speakers in the Lexington community. In some cases, the departments are underwriting the cost of instruction; in other cases, the participants themselves are picking up the cost. Payment from departments or corporations can be made by IDIV or invoiced. For further information, contact the Center for ESL at 257-7003 (Sally Fouts) or 257-6998 (Liga Abolins) or email esl@uky.edu. Also see www.uky.edu/as/english/esl.
