Pronunciation for Non-Native Speakers of English I. SPRING SESSION I
Tuesday & Thursday, 12:30-2:00 p.m.,  January 15-February 21, 2008, Room TBA

The class will concentrate on both pronunciation and intonation, with the intention of making participants more comprehensible to their students, peers, clients, and co-workers.  A diagnostic test will be administered to all participants to determine their individual problem areas in pronunciation.  Participants will be asked to make audio and video recordings to provide better feedback on each participant’s special needs.  Students will also be encouraged to make presentations. Participants will be required to buy a textbook.

Advanced ESL Grammar I (Online), SPRING SESSIONS I & II

Spring Session I / Orientation Class: Wednesday, January 16, 12-1 p.m. (or to be arranged)
Spring Session II/Orientation Class: Wednesday, March 19, 12-1 p.m. (or to be arranged)

This course is designed for advanced non-native speakers of English who have a good foundation in English grammar but would like to learn, review, or finally master some of its finer points at both the sentence and discourse level.  The lessons will involve animated presentations, interactive activities in all skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), plenty of practice exercises, and frequent progress checks in the form of quizzes and tests.  Topics covered will include an overview of the English verb system (tense and aspect), complex passives, article usage, etc.  The course will be especially helpful for TOEFL preparation, academic writing, or professional communication in general.  Other than the first orientation class meeting, the course will be conducted entirely online.  You will be required to buy a textbook/software package and have regular access to the internet.  You will also need a UK Blackboard account in order to access the course materials; if you do not already have one, please contact the Center for ESL early enough to get one before the first day of class.

Cost: $240 (6 weeks)                                                                          Instructor:  K. Harden

Advanced ESL Grammar II (Online)

Spring Session / Orientation Class: Monday, March 24, 12-1 p.m. (or by appointment)

This course is the continuation of Advanced ESL Grammar I above.  Additional topics will be covered, including complex structures with modals, gerunds, and infinitives, clause reductions, adjective and noun complements, etc.   The same textbook/software package can be used for both courses, so no additional materials will be necessary.

Cost: $240                                                                                            Instructor: K. Harden
