The Center for English as a Second Language at
the University of Kentucky will teach five specialty classes to advanced
non-native speakers of English in Spring 2008. If the times do
not fit your schedules, please let us know. We will try to accommodate
schedules, if possible.
Pronunciation for Non-Native Speakers of English
I. SPRING SESSION I
Tuesday & Thursday, 12:30-2:00 p.m., January
15-February 21, 2008, Room TBA
The class will concentrate on both pronunciation and intonation, with the
intention of making participants more comprehensible to their students, peers,
clients, and co-workers. A diagnostic test will be administered to all
participants to determine their individual problem areas in pronunciation.
Participants will be asked to make audio and video recordings to provide better
feedback on each participant’s special needs. Students will also be encouraged
to make presentations. Participants will be required to buy a textbook.

Pronunciation for Non-Native Speakers of
English II. SPRING SESSION II
Monday & Wednesday, 6:00-7:30 p.m., March
17-April 23, 2008, CB 235
This class is a continuation of Pronunciation I and is open only to students who
have completed a pronunciation class at the University of Kentucky in the past
five years. Primary emphasis will be on suprasegmentals, intonation and
timing. One session will be devoted to a diagnostic test. The class will use
the last half of the text, Sound Concepts.

Advanced ESL Grammar I (Online), SPRING SESSIONS
I & II
Spring Session I / Orientation Class: Wednesday,
January 16, 12-1 p.m. (or to be arranged)
Spring Session II/Orientation Class: Wednesday,
March 19, 12-1 p.m. (or to be arranged)
This course is designed for advanced non-native speakers of English who have a
good foundation in English grammar but would like to learn, review, or finally
master some of its finer points at both the sentence and discourse level.
The lessons will involve animated
presentations, interactive activities in all skills (reading, writing,
listening, speaking), plenty of practice exercises, and frequent progress checks
in the form of quizzes and tests. Topics covered will include an overview of
the English verb system (tense and aspect), complex passives, article usage,
etc. The course will be especially helpful for TOEFL preparation, academic
writing, or professional communication in general. Other than the first
orientation class meeting, the course will be conducted entirely online. You
will be required to buy a textbook/software package and have regular access to
the internet. You will also need a UK Blackboard account in order to access the
course materials; if you do not already have one, please contact the Center for
ESL early enough to get one before the first day of class.

Advanced ESL Grammar II (Online)
Spring Session / Orientation Class: Monday, March
24, 12-1 p.m. (or by appointment)
This course is the continuation of Advanced ESL Grammar I above. Additional
topics will be covered, including complex structures with modals, gerunds, and
infinitives, clause reductions, adjective and noun complements, etc. The same
textbook/software package can be used for both courses, so no additional
materials will be necessary.

All sections are open to University of Kentucky faculty, graduate
students, researchers, post docs and advanced English speakers in the
Lexington community. In some cases, the departments are underwriting the
cost of instruction; in other cases, the participants themselves are picking
up the cost. Payment from departments or corporations can be made by IDIV
