University Writing Requirement


Exemption/Placement

 
If a student receives a score of 32 or above on ACT English (1) Exempt from the first-year writing requirement
(2) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a student receives a score 700 or above on SAT Verbal (1) Exempt from the first-year writing requirement
(2) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a student receives a 4 or 5 on AP English Language (1) 4 credits awarded for ENG 104 with a grade of "CR"
(2) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a student receives a 3 on the AP English Language (1) 3 credits awarded for ENG 101 with a grade of "CR"
(2) May enroll in ENG 102 or ENG 104 (recommended)
(3) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a student receives a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP English Literature or the equivalent on the IB (1) 3 credits awarded for ENG 161 with a grade of "CR"
(2) Student enrolls into ENG 104
(3) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a student has taken a CLEP exam (1) No credit awarded
(2) Student enrolls into ENG 104
(3) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a transfer student has taken ENG 101 and 102 (or equivalent) (1) First-year writing requirement satisfied
(2) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a transfer student has taken a 3-unit first-year writing course (1) May enroll in ENG 102 or ENG 104 (recommended)
(2) Must enroll in the 200+-level after achieving sophomore status
 
If a transfer student has taken ENG 101 and 102 (or equivalent) and has 3 or more hours of credit for a 200+-level EnglishLiterature course (1) First-year writing requirement satisfied

Honors students with a score of 29 or better on the English component of the ACT may satisfy both the University Writing requirement and the Humanities requirement by passing three colloquia. Those with less than 29 on the English component of the ACT may satisfy both requirements by passing four colloquia. Honors students who complete all four colloquia also satisfy the six-hour USP elective requirement.
