Introduction to HTML

HyperText Markup Language can be used to define the structure and appearance of documents in standardized ways that can be read and displayed by browsers (e.g., Internet Explorer and Netscape) running on a variety of computer platforms (e.g., PC and Mac). When placed on a server (e.g., www.uky.edu or sweb.uky.edu), these HTML-formatted documents can be viewed via the World Wide Web. The syntax of HTML must be followed carefully in order for the text and image content of the document(s) to be displayed accurately and consistently. While programs like MS Word and PowerPoint allow users to convert files to HTML, text editors like Notepad are ideal for encoding documents in HTML. Such encoding instructs the browser to render the text in particular font styles, sizes, and structures, to access given image files and display them according to the parameters supplied, and to link users to given files stored on servers throughout the WWW. The tutorials accessible below feature examples of the more common ways to format the text and image content so that a file can be saved as an HTML document (with a .htm or .html extension), displayed in a browser, and moved to a server for use on the WWW.
