am excited with the opportunity to serve as Chair of the AGSG for this
year and the following and my hope is that we can continue to make progress
in promoting Asian Geography both within and outside the discipline.
Please do take
the time after you read this to contribute announcements of conferences,
research projects, publication citations and other materials - directly
to Bimal - that you feel should be communicated to the membership of the
group. Bimal and I have discussed distributing the Newsletter electronically
beginning with the next number and hope that this new mode of communication
will bring news and information both more quickly and perhaps place the
AGSG more conspicuously in your thoughts, plans and priorities.
We again will
have a healthy selection of paper presentations at the Boston AAG meeting
and I applaud those of you who have organized the special sessions and
will be contributing to them. I strongly encourage more of you to
present papers at the annual Association of Asian Studies meetings, at
regional meetings of the AAG, and especially international gatherings
of Asianists.
