Dr. Dutt has been included in the 25-year old Geographers On Film series, sponsored by AAG.  Other members of the Asian Specialty Group who have been included in this series are Norton Ginsburg, P.P. Karan, and Joseph Schwartzberg. 

National Geographic Magazine published a special issue on India in May 1997, which consisted of several maps and diagrams of India.  Dr. Ashok Dutt, Robert Huke, and Joseph Schwartzberg acted as consultants for the maps.  They have been acknowledged at the lower right hand corner of the large map of India included in the May volume. 

Jayati Ghosh, Univ. of Wisconsin-Whitewater recently published the following papers: 

"The Status of Women in the Indian Workforce" (1996). Conference Proceedings, National Conference on Undergraduate Research, Asheville, North Carolina, pp. 411-415 (with S. Peters).  

"Socio-Economic Factors and the Spread of Infectious Diseases: The Case of India" (1996). Conference Proceedings, Annual Applied Geography Conference, Kansas City, Kansas, pp. 177-183 .  

"Social and Economic Status of Women and the Spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in India" (1997).  To be published in the Conference Proceedings, Annual Applied Geography Conference, Albuquerque, New Mexico, pp. 148-155. 

She also won the University award for Outstanding Academic Staff in 1997.

 
 
STUDENT PAPER AWARD
 

Papers are being requested for the third annual Asian Geography/Regional Development and Planning Student Award.  The award has been made possible by the generosity of Aninda K. Chakravarti.  Dr. Chakravarti is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Professor Emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan.  He has been an active researcher in the field of agriculture and nutrition with a South Asian focus. 

The award is jointly administered by the Asian Specialty Group and the Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group.  All papers should be submitted to Dr. Jayati Ghosh, Department of Geography, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 800 West Main Street, Whitewater, WI  53190.  Phone (414) 472-1074/472-1071, fax (414) 472-5633, e-mail ghoshj@uwwvax.uww.edu  All manuscripts must be forwarded by the head/chairperson/faculty advisor of the applicant with a statement confirming student status.  All papers should be received by February 15, 1998.
