Departmental News

Recent Awards. Professor Thomas Leinbach has been named the 2006-07 College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor. Professor Jonathan Phillips has been named University Research Professor. Professor Sue Roberts won the William Sturgill Award for Excellence in Graduate Education. These awards represent the UK's highest professional recognition for outstanding teaching, research and service.

New Faculty Members. The Geography Department welcomed new faculty members Marshall Wilkinson and Rosemary Sherriff as Assistant Professors this Fall. Previously, the Department added four professors including Associate Professor Andrew Wood, Associate Professor Michael Samers, Assistant Professor Patricia Ehrkamp and Assistant Professor Morgan Robertson.

Fridays during Spring & Fall Semesters. A weekly departmental tradition featuring guest speakers from international geography academic programs and professions. Events are often followed by receptions or libations in one of Lexington's fine restaurants or sunny patios.

Ellen Churchill Semple, 1863-1933


Spring 2008: Semple Day takes place each spring, and features a variety of activities during the day, including an open colloquium by the featured Semple Day Speaker. The namesake of this celebration, Ellen Churchill Semple, was born in Louisville in 1863, and is considered one of the century's foremost geographers.
