Prompt: New directions in feminist political ecology
18 Jan 2012 at 11:27am
As part of the Kentucky Political Ecology Working Group's continuing series on key ideas in political ecology, we're soliciting short (300 words or less) essays on emerging feminist political ecologies. We ask, 'what are the most exciting new developments in the subfield? How are the concerns of poly-vocal feminist theory and practice being brought into political ecology? How are the insights generated by feminist political ecologists influencing environment-society studies more generally?' Authors could respond to any of those questions, or related issues as they choose. We are also happy to accept non-academic perspectives and visual/creative artistic responses as well. Please send submissions to patrick [dot] bigger [at] uky [dot] edu by February 1, 2012. Responses will be published shortly thereafter on politicalecology.org.

For responses to previous prompts, please see here and here.

Responses: Where is the politics in political ecology?
4 Jan 2012 at 11:55am
In our second round of prompts on key ideas in political ecology, we asked, following Peter Walker, 'Where is the politics in political ecology.' Below are five responses we received; they run from solid academic contributions to thought provoking pieces of art. The next prompt will be released shortly. Please feel free to use the comments to further reflect on politics in political ecology!

A c a s e f o r ‘ s o - f a r s t o r i e s ’

Working as an ecoartist, the ‘politics’ in political ecology lies in making and placing images about entwined patterns of co-existence, as animals, people, climate and land adjust to each other. This piece is about how I try to expand my human viewpoint.

At one point I worked within a university where there were ‘cuts’ in the offing, with corporate and commercial values winning the day. I found I was beginning to self-censor and started to stitch this response.

It consists of the letters “ICANTHINKWHATILIKE’ (Image 1) re-placed onto camouflage fabric...

Prompt: Where is the politics in political ecology?
1 Dec 2011 at 10:08am
On the heels of the generally excellent responses to the first prompt on defining political ecology, we follow Peter Walker (2007) in asking, Where is the politics in political ecology?
Respondents are encouraged to answer this question by taking any approach they see fit- conventional or otherwise. Our single stipulation is that responses be around 300 words (artwork is also gladly accepted!).
We encourage a wide range of responses, from beginning graduate students to senior faculty, and we anticipate participation from diverse disciplinary perspectives. To submit, please send your response to ukpewg [at] gmail [dot] com by Tuesday, December 13. Responses will be published shortly thereafter.

Responses are up!

Responses: What is Political Ecology?
14 Nov 2011 at 8:27am

UKPEWG is pleased to present the first round of essays in an ongoing series on key ideas in political ecology. Below, you will find ten responses to the prompt, 'What is political ecology?' The responses range from broad overviews to project-specific answers. The final entry is a document prepared by the original Political Ecology Working Group at UC-Santa Cruz in 2002.
Political Ecology is a kind of text

Political Ecology represents neither a theory nor a method, but instead reflects a global community of practice, convened around a certain kind of text.
As a community of practice, political ecology has formed a general constituency: a global conversation revolving around a set of themes, which adopts a specific sort of critical attitude. It is drawn from a large group of people who write professionally (like university academics) as well as those in international agencies (e.g. FAO), NGOs (e.g. WWF), state bureaucracies (e.g. USEPA), and local organizations. Typically, its constituen...
