Master’s Thesis: “Sweetgrass Basketry: The Political Ecology of an African-American Art in the South Carolina Lowcountry.” Bachelor’s Thesis: “The Power in Love: Nonviolence as a Revitalization Movement”
Brian Grabbatin is a second year PhD student interested in political ecology, ethnobotany, and cultural landscapes, especially in the American South. His master’s thesis focused on the relationships between amenity-driven coastal development and the harvesting practices of African-American sweetgrass basket makers in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. This research has implications for understanding how land-based livelihoods are impacted by land management and urbanization in the United States.
