I'm currently living in northern
New Mexico where I conduct research on my dissertation
titled (tentatively) "Making the Forest a Factory: Nature,
Work, and Regulation in Northern New Mexico".
I'm looking historically at the dispossession
of Spanish and Mexican land grants and the contemporary
struggle over land and resources that serve as
the foundation of recent environmental conflict
on federal forests in New Mexico. Through a case
study of the rural, largely Hispano villages
in what is currently managed as a sustained yield
timber unit on the Carson National Forest in
Vallecitos, New Mexico, I consider the ecological
and economic impact of enclosure and the subsequent
transition from subsistence agropastoral production
to industrial forestry. I will defend my dissertation
in March 2006.
