This book is a study in man-environment relationships. It has two major objectives: first, to describe the processes of economic development and modernization that have shaped the economy of Peninsular Malaysia; and secondly, to examine the impact of those processes on the natural, rural, and urban environments of the region. The bulk of the book is devoted to the examination of relationships between specific economic activities–tin mining, plantation agriculture, timber exploration, industrialization, for example–and their environmental consequences, both past and present. A meaningful stewardship of Peninsular Malaysia’s natural heritage will require comprehensive knowledge about the operation of biophysical processes in the region and about man’s impact upon them. This book is a contribution to that knowledge.
