Profile
Hi there. I am an incoming PhD student for Fall 2005. I originally hail from the UK (Britain, not Kentucky) and arrived in Lexington via North Carolina. I completed my MA at the University of South Florida with a research focus on social inequality in the City of St. Petersburg (Florida). My thesis explored the spatial manifestations of inequality and the role played by city planning.
My current research interests are broadly structured around issues of poverty, inequality and development, with a regional focus on South East Asia. I am particularly interested in informal and independent tourist markets and their role in alternative development strategies. How does community empowerment through such small scale developments impact societal structures and the accepted concepts of development? In addition, how are such small scale ventures viewed within societal concepts of progress and modernity and what impact do they have on the structure of power relations within the community?
