Profile

When not acting as the captain of the Princeton Rowing Crew, Tommy likes to partake in the cultural geography and social theory. It is in these clear-cut and easily decidable modes of inquiry that he finds respite from the always-shifting world of small vessel captainship. As a social 'scientist', Tommy is particularly interested in issues concerning landscape and power in Appalachia. Specifically, he is concerned with elite spaces and their role in concretizing the claims of regional conceptions of development (landscape as Truth), as well as how those spaces offer 'stages' for the performance of elitism - that is to say, it may be hard to fill the role of despot if there are no places to 'be' like one. Tommy's research also stretches into the sportscapes of rockclimbing, exploring the way in which those sites (re)situate people as political subjects.

Tommy earned his BA in Geography from the University of Kentucky and is currently a rookie in the Masters program.
