The Coal Geology Program within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and allied disciplines has a breadth and depth of coal geology research unparalleled in any academic setting in North America.

The combination of regular faculty in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and adjunct faculty in the KGS and CAER serve as the core of coal geology researchers in the program, with additional program members drawn from other departments and research institutes.

Areas of expertise of faculty in the program include coal geochemistry, mineral matter in coal, coal petrology, palynology, organic maturation (vitrinite reflectance and spectral fluorescence), sedimentology of coal-bearing strata, coal depositional environments, mine-roof stability, and coal resource evaluation.
