Jim Drahovzal heads up a research and service group at the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), part of the Research program at the University of Kentucky. In that capacity, he is responsible for service and research related to the energy and mineral industries. His particular research interests since coming to Kentucky have been in the area of Proterozoic and Cambrian rifted sequences in Kentucky. He is currently collecting and interpreting reflection seismic data and integrating it with deep well information in developing information on the thickness and distribution of the rift sequences, as well as the configuration of the top of the Precambrian for the state. In another aspect of this research, he is relating the structure and stratigraphy Proterozoic, Cambrian, and Ordovician sequences to the generation, migration and entrapment of oil and natural gas. He also has a research interest in CO2 sequestration and he has been instrumental in developing and completing several multi-state efforts to study anthropogenic sources of CO2 and viable geologic sinks for this greenhouse gas. A four-year, U.S. DOE-funded study was recently completed and additional federally funded sequestration studies under his direction will continue at least for the next four year. Dr. Drahovzal also works with graduate students in theses related to KGS projects. His background also includes surface geologic mapping, remote sensing, and cephalopod and conodont biostratigraphy.
