Stephen Fisher is interested in all aspects of the geochemistry of water-rock interactions. Previous work includes the use of strontium isotopes to trace ground-water origin, geochemical evolution of minerals and fluids during diagenesis, the origin and chemical evolution of deep basinal brines, geochemistry of ground water in the arid southwest, clay diagenesis in evaporite environments, and the geologic and geochemical controls on naturally occurring radioactive materials associated with oil and gas operations.

Prior to joining the Kentucky Geological Survey in 1996, Dr. Fisher was a Research Scientist and Program Manager at the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology. At the Kentucky Geological Survey he is Coordinator of Ground-Water Monitoring Networks and has provided technical assistance to state agencies involved with remedial activities at the Maxey Flats Disposal Site and the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Current research involves mapping and evaluating ground-water quality throughout Kentucky, and statistical analysis of ground-water data.
