GLY 102-001 Historical Geology
Fall 1998
Historical Geology Extra Credit Alternative for the Field Trip Extra
Credit.
If you missed the field trip and really wanted to go, this is the makeup
you can do for the equivalent extra credit. It should take about
as long as the field trip itself took, including accounting for the lost
sleep (about 12 hours). It may take longer.
Assigned: Tuesday, November 24, 1998.
Due: Thursday, December 10, 1998.
Value: 1.5 points maximum toward your final grade in the course.
Assignment: Write a story about Kentucky geology. Very
specifically:
-
Go to the Pirtle Library, and browse through the theses (M.S. and Ph.D.)
on the shelf.
-
Pick one out that is about some aspect of Kentucky Geology.
-
Email saberm2@pop.uky.edu (seth) with your choice of thesis title/author/date
to be sure there is no conflict with anyone else. First come, first
serve on this assignment.
-
The situation for your story is this: this is your thesis
topic. A young person (your niece, perhaps, or other) is interested
in learning about your graduate studies in geology. "What is it that
you are studying?" they ask. You must tell them, in such a way that
they can understand. Essentially, assume this to be a reasonably
bright middle-school student, who has taken some science courses in school
and who has a good native interest in science, and a good capability for
learning. Make it interesting for this student, and informative.
-
Your story should be long enough to tell the story well. No minimum or
maximum page limits.
-
Include at least one hand-sketched drawing to illustrate some aspect of
your graduate study. This can be something akin to a map drawn on
the back of a napkin, or something more complex, but it should reflect
the nature of your telling of this geological story to this young person.
Grade: of 1.5 points.
1.5 pts: Clear,
well-written, interesting story that accurately tells the main idea of
that thesis. Good solid efforts will receive 1.5 even if there
are minor problems in your interpretation. Remember, you can come
ask either Seth or Me for help in understanding the thesis topic and specifics.
1 pt:
Not as clear, or as well-written. Less effort shown than needed to
do a really good job.
0 to 0.5 pts: Definite problems in understanding, style,
or effort shown..
