A Field Trip to Sapelo Island, Georgia
Sunday, May 5, 1996. We boarded the last ferry of the day in Meridian, GA, to head to Sapelo Island. The sun and tide were both low, muddy tidal flats exposed all around us and a small school of dolphins played in the tidal creek 100 yards away. A good omen, no doubt. Glenda and Walter look ready to go.

Some of us were more ready than others for sunning. Mark catches a few rays as we headed out past the fully exposed Spartina alternaflora marsh grass typical of the "low marsh" near the tidal creeks. This marsh grass is tallest when it grows near Mean High Water level and is only half as tall in the "high marsh" near Spring High Water.

Rolling along the "Autobahn" in the blue Georgia DNR school bus with no door, we had a fine view of the transition from forest of the "hummocks" to the marsh. But WE WANTED THE BEACH!

Finally! There it was! With the tide low, there were even beach cusps left for us to ponder. Four days and nights of sedimentary bliss. Ahhh.
