Dissertation Title: Plato on Knowledge, Virtue, and the Denial of Akrasia
In my dissertation I will argue that Plato, contrary to common scholarly opinion, maintains Socrates' denial of akrasia in the Republic and throughout his career. In the Republic Plato does, however, advance a new pedagogy for teaching virtue, going beyond the Socratic elenchus. Virtue is knowledge, but it is a knowledge tied to character, and thus involves not only the rational but also appetitive and spirited parts of the soul.
