The Ph.D. Program
The Ph.D. program in philosophy is designed to prepare students for college and university teaching careers. Students will need to demonstrate reading competence in at least one foreign language, as well as competence in logic. All Ph.D. students will need to pass comprehensive examinations in (a) Metaphysics and Epistemology and (b) Value Theory, in addition to completing a three-course 20th-Century requirement (at least one of which is a course in Metaphysics & Epistemology, and one of which is a course in Value Theory). A Qualifying Examination in each student's area of specialization precedes the writing of the dissertation.
The M.A. Degree
Normally, students are not admitted into a terminal M.A. program, and under no circumstances will such a student be considered for financial aid. The requirements for the M.A. include: 30 hours of course work; a reading competence in at least one foreign language; competence in logic; passing a comprehensive examination in either Metaphysics and Epistemology, or Value Theory; and completion of the three-course requirement in 20th-Century Philosophy. The M.A. is awarded to students in the Ph.D. program upon completion of all applicable requirements.
