I study the social and educational
implications for children of belonging to negatively-stereotyped social
groups (e.g., racial, ethnic, and gender groups). Children in negatively-stereotyped
groups are at risk for several reasons. First, children experience discrimination
by their peers and teachers, and this has educational and social repercussions.
My research, therefore, examines the predictors and consequences of children’s
perceptions of discrimination, particularly academic discrimination. In
addition, an important factor that has been implicated as a buffer against
stigma is racial/ethnic and gender identity. Thus, my research also examines
contextual and individual differences in identity development. To see
