MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR APPLICATION
To
Graduate Program in Sociology
The University of Kentucky
The following items must be submitted when applying for admission to
the Graduate Program in Sociology. Applications for admission will not
be reviewed until all items have been received.

- Application for Admission to the Graduate School (available from the Graduate School).
- Transcripts of academic work completed at all colleges and universities attended since high school.
- GRE scores. A minimum combined score of 1500 on the aptitude (verbal, quantitative, and analytical) section of the Graduate Record Exam is expected.
Note: The new essay analytical component of the GRE exam should be multiplied by 100 to calculate the composite GRE aptitude score.
Applicants are not required or expected to take the subject test in
Sociology. Please ensure that you take the GRE in sufficient time for the
scores to be received at the Graduate School by January 15.

- Three letters of recommendation (required of all applicants, including those applying for a University fellowship or a departmental assistantship).
- Please indicate whether or not you whish to waive your right of access to your letters of recommendation by checking the appropriate space and signing and dating each copy of the LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION form. Do this before giving the forms to your references. Be sure to fill in your name and social security number on each copy.
- A statement of your goals and reasons for pursuing an advanced degree in sociology.
- It is helpful if applicants also address the field(s) of interest within
sociology they may wish to pursue in their graduate studies.
- A sample of your writing, preferably in the form of a term paper, an extensive essay, or a draft of a senior thesis. If you have completed a master's degree, you may submit one or two chapters of your thesis. Please do not submit a copy of your entire thesis.
- Application form for fellowships and assistantships, if you wish to apply for a teaching assistantship, research assistantship, traineeship, or nonservice fellowship.
