Enriching Your Experience in Sociology
Here are a few ways to make the most of your experience in Sociology:
- Visit your assigned faculty advisor on a regular basis to discuss
your goals so that you may design a learning program that will work best
for you.
- Pursue an internship. You may earn up to 15 hours of
SOC 399 credit for internship work in a field, organization, community or
group that interests you. For assistance in locating an internship position,
click on http://www.uky.edu/EE/. In
order to receive academic credit in Sociology, you must identify a faculty
mentor to oversee your internship. You and that person will fill out and
file a learning contract which spells out the requirements and expectations
for the internship experience. During some semesters, the department may
offer a SOC 399 seminar to provide students with the opportunity to discuss
their internship experiences with their peers.
- Volunteer. Regardless of whether you receive college credit for
such activities, volunteering in the community is an excellent way to learn
and apply sociological knowledge and skills. Click on http://www.uky.edu/VolunteerCenter/

- Attend lectures, brown bag discussions, workshops, film showings,
and other educational events on campus and in the community. To find out
more about these opportunities, check out the “News and Events” page of
the Sociology Department and other departments and interdisciplinary programs.

- Get involved. Contact the DUS if you are interested in participating
in the Undergraduate Sociology Club or attending departmental meetings or
functions, in either a formal or informal capacity. Each year, two students
are chosen to represent undergraduate interests at department and committee
meetings. Please contact the DUS to obtain undergraduate representative
contact information or to volunteer to serve.
- Seek support. Support and advice are available to you in the
department, on campus, and elsewhere. Click on Assistance
and Resources for Sociology Students for additional information on this
topic.
