African American Studies and Research Program

Research Assistantships throughout the year African American Studies faculty are actively involved in a diverse number of research projects. At times these projects require the assistance of either graduate or undergraduate students.

Carter G. Woodson Lecture Series co-sponsored by AASRP and the ML King Culture Center, this series serves to enrich the campus & the community’s intellectual understanding of various topics and themes relating to issues of race and culture.

Topical Lecture Series co-sponsored by AASRP and the History Department, this lecture series seeks to promote interdisciplinary research by inviting outstanding scholars to UK’s campus.

Black Women’s Conference begun in 1994, the Black Women’s Conference provides the UK community with the opportunity to hear speakers and engage in discussions concerning African American women’s scholarship and culture.

Charles H. Wesley Prize in honor of Historian Charles H. Wesley's early commitment to the study of the black experience, AASRP seeks to recognize the best graduate and undergraduate research paper written on an African American Studies topic at the University of Kentucky during the academic year.

Anthropology

Field school

The Kentucky Archaeological Survey is a joint undertaking of the Kentucky Heritage Council, and UK's Department of Anthropology. The survey provides technical assistance to state agencies and non-profits and works cooperatively with public schools and educational organizations. Many opportunities exist for UK students to participate with the Survey in archaeological research and public outreach and educational efforts.

The William S. Webb Museum of Anthropology houses extensive archaeological collections of national and regional importance. The Museum is Kentucky's premier repository for archaeological collections relating to all phases of our rich prehistoric record, and history since the founding of the Commonwealth.

Biology

Student affiliate group organization with president and vice president; this group organizes student activities and invites seminar speakers.

Two major annual symposiums where internationally know speakers are brought to campus to give presentations and interact with students.

The Hammond Competition for excellence in Chemistry where graduating students take tests to compete for significant awards.

Research poster competitions at both the departmental and regional levels with several awards presented.

Journals - the department produces a student journal, "Limestone" for creative writing, Journal of Caribbean Studies, American Literary History (2nd most prestigious journal in field, American Notes and Queries

Two major academic awards: Dantzler-Dantzler Award ($1500), and the O.J. and Ruby Wilson Scholarship ($500 ). Each award annually recognizes a member of the senior class for outstanding academic achievement. Seniors with a 3.5 cumulative GPA are eligible. Faculty recommendations will determine the winners.

Dantzler Award for Fiction ($100) is given annually for the best fiction submission from an enrolled UK Lexington campus or LCC undergraduate student. A distinguished fiction writer from the community judges the competition.

Farquhar Award for Poetry ($100) is given annually for the best poetry submission from an enrolled UK Lexington campus or LCC undergraduate student. A distinguished poet from the community judges the competition.

French

Scholarships for French majors include the following:

La Résidence Française - located in Keeneland Hall on North Campus; an all-French living experience, La Résidence is designed to immerse students in the French language an in French and Francophone culture.

La Table Française - students of all levels meet with faculty for conversation Wednesday afternoons, 3-5 pm, at The Magic Bean, a café near the UK campus. L’Alliance Française

French Television (TV-5) UK’s French Department offers current TV programming from France and Francophone countries 24 hours a day on UK Cable channel 46

Geography

Undergraduate fieldwork opportunities in Oaxaca, Mexico and Japan

Geology

Majors visit: Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia

Numerous field experiences - almost every course involves fieldtrips and fieldwork around Kentucky Weeklong trips, at the end of the spring term, to Canada, New England, Georgia coast, or the western US

GLY 323 Geology Field Camp: a 6-week field camp during the summer - 2 weeks are spent in central KY and 4 weeks in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado

German

Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS)

Summer study abroad programs to Munich and Bregenz.

Max Kade German House and Cultural Center on campus, where advanced students in German can live in a German-language environment

Film series and a regularly scheduled Kaffeestunde.

History

Holman Hamilton Scholarship ($3000) - each fall the department selects an outstanding first-semester senior for the tuition award.

The Raymond Betts Fellowship ($1,000) is awarded each fall to a history major.

Robert G. Lunde Award ($100) - the graduating senior with the highest grade point average is recognized.

Philo Bennett Prize - each spring a special departmental committee announces a competition for an award of $100 for the best historical paper by an undergraduate.

Phi Alpha Theta - the national history honorary society. Undergraduates with at least 12 hours in history, a 3.1 grade point average, and a 3.0 overall average are eligible for membership. The chapter's activities include special movie showings, an annual Awards Night, an annual picnic and other fun social events.

Mathematics

MathExcel This program was set up to provide more intensive calculus education to at-risk students. It is nationally known and has been immensely successful in improving calculus instruction. Students in the MathExcel program at Kentucky receive higher grades in calculus and have been shown to graduate at a higher rate

Math House The department has exclusive control over a two story house (dubbed the Math House) located within easy walking distance of student dormitories.

Math Club The Math Club has been active in promoting students to give presentations at regional and national meetings of professional mathematics organizations.

Departmental Scholarships A scholarship fund established in memory of Carolyn Bunyan enables the mathematics department to award up to three $500 grants to highly successful upper division math students to assist them in completing their education. Also, the Sally Pence awards for students planning to teach high school mathematics.

Mentoring There are many opportunities for motivated undergraduates to work on research projects with faculty members in the department.
