University of Kentucky Gender and Women's Studies Program

Welcome

The Gender and Women's Studies Program at the University of Kentucky investigates gender broadly conceived and the cultures and contributions of women worldwide from feminist / womanist perspectives.

The purpose of the program is to develop and coordinate an interdisciplinary curriculum in Gender and Women's Studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels; support critical research, teaching and public programming in Gender and Women's Studies that take into account various beliefs about gender, race, class, and sexuality; and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Gender and Women's Studies Program aims to serve the University and the Commonwealth through promotion of equity and commitment to excellence.

Gender and Women’s Studies is very pleased to introduce our three new GWS faculty.

Special Events.

The GWS program is in the process of planning some very special events for Spring 2008. Please stay tuned – these events will be posted on our “Events” page once they are finalized.

The State of the Program.

As many of you know, the GWS program at UK is currently making plans to transition from a program to a department, with both undergraduate and graduate degrees.  While this is a long and detailed process, we are looking forward to completing a number of important and necessary tasks by the end of this academic year. As we move through the various stages of the process, we will keep you all informed of our progress. Thank you to all who have helped and are helping GWS with the proposed transition, and thanks to all of you who have provided encouragement. And finally, and most especially, thanks to all students who have contacted us to ask what’s taking so long! We look forward to seeing many of you here in the very near future as our students.

Best regards to all, Deb Crooks, Director
