Winter Session Course ScheduleENG 330-301 JANE EYRE AND THE GOTHIC Love potions, screams in the night, ghostly presences, haunted mansions, terrifying dreams, disembodied voices, rumors of incest—such are the trappings of the gothic. This course will look closely at the Jane Eyre narratives, including the Bronte classic itself (1847), its prequel (Wide Sargasso Sea [1966] by Jean Rhys which relates the back story of a crucial though voiceless Jane Eyre character), and Rebecca (1938), a fascinating revision of the Jane Eyre plot. As well, we will examine the film adaptations (including the Orson Welles Jane Eyre [1944] and the Hitchcock Rebecca [1940]). Our focus will concern the gothic elements which decorate and, in some ways, determine the progress of these narratives. Major assignments include: one short and one long paper, an oral presentation, written and oral peer review, and much class discussion Instructor: Janice Oaks (Ref.#06854), MTWRF, 10:00-12:00 & 12:30-2:30, CB 338. This course may be used in fulfilling a requirement for the GWS Minor or GWS Topical Major. |
