How do I apply for ....?

For the fall semester, freshmen applicants should submit all documents to the Office of Undergraduate Admission by February 15. For transfer, readmission, and non-degree applicants, the deadline is August 1. We begin reviewing applications and making decisions on a rolling basis beginning in mid-October. For an application please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission or visit Application Forms.

For a student's application to be complete, we need an application for admission, official high school or college transcripts, official ACT or SAT scores, and a $40 application processing fee. Once an application is complete, a student can expect a response within two to three weeks.

You must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available in high school guidance offices or at the FAFSA web site, in order to receive financial assistance at UK. The priority deadline for financial aid is February 15 of the student's senior year. For more information, please visit Office of Student Financial Aid.

In order to be considered for academic scholarships, you must obtain an application from the Office of Academic Scholarships. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible to compete: a minimum unweighted cumulative high school grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale and either a minimum 28 ACT composite or a minimum 1240 SAT total. The deadline for application is January 15.

Additionally, several departments and colleges within the University administer their own scholarship programs. Students who have chosen a major are encouraged to contact the department or college in their major area of study regarding additional scholarship opportunities. These programs may have different deadlines and selection criteria.

Please visit Residency (In-state vs. out-of-state) for a residency application or call the Residency Office at (859) 257-3256 for more information.

The Undergraduate Housing Office will send housing applications to high school seniors after they have been admitted to the University. UK encourages students to apply for housing as soon as they receive the housing application as housing priority is based on the date of housing application. New students will receive their housing assignments by the end of June. At that time, they will also receive the names and addresses of their new roommates.

The University does not require freshmen to live on campus, but students are highly encouraged to do so. Approximately 85-90 percent of freshmen live in residence halls, and approximately 5,300 of our 17,000 undergraduates live on campus.

UK has 22 residence halls and one undergraduate apartment complex. Most halls are arranged in corridors of 30-40 people with a large bathroom for each corridor. Most rooms are for two people, although one residence hall (Keeneland Hall) is arranged in a suite formation. Many are co-ed by floor, although single-sex halls are available. There is always something going on in the residence halls for students, whether it is residence hall government activities, educational and recreational programs, or social and community service activities.

Visit Auxiliary Services for additional information.

All new freshmen and transfer students are required to attend an advising conference as assigned at the time of admission. During a two-day conference, students meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, and have the opportunity to learn more about the campus and what to expect from University life. Students also have the opportunity to take certain placement exams and meet with UK faculty, staff, and students. When admitted to UK, a student receives complete information about the Advising Conference. For more information, visit Freshman Summer Two-Day Advising Conferences.

The measure of the competition that a student will face in the admissions process is expressed in the middle 50% range of GPA and test scores that received an offer of admission to last year's class. The middle 50% of the freshman class scored in the 22-27 range on the ACT. The middle 50% of the freshman class had a high school GPA of 3.3-3.9 out of a 4.0 scale.

Current enrollment at UK is approximately 24,000, which includes 17,000 undergraduates. The usual size of the freshman class about 3,700.

As is typical at most universities, class size will range from a seminar of 5-10 students to a lecture class of 300. 90% of classes have 40 or fewer students. The average class size is 25, and the student to faculty ratio is 16:1. If a student does have a large class, that class breaks down into much smaller lab or discussion sections so that students receive a more personalized classroom experience. A large lecture will almost always be tempered by a smaller recitation.

The program includes four seminars in the history of ideas, tracing the development of Western civilization from antiquity to the present and providing the basis for a liberal arts education. Also included are upper-class proseminars and an optional independent research project. Eligible students must complete an application, which consists of several questions and brief essays designed to elicit a sense of the individual's experience and commitment to academic excellence.

First-year students generally have a 3.5 or above high school GPA and an ACT composite of 28 or above. (Students whose scores vary are encouraged to make their best case for admission via the application essays.)
