Announcements and Procedures to Register for Fall 2008

Registration for Fall 2008
Advising for Fall 2008 begins on March 17th. Schedule books for students should be available at that time. Class schedules are also available on the web at http://www.uky.edu/Registrar/schedule.htm If you fail to register during your primary window you will have to wait for late registration after classes begin and take the "left-over" space in your classes. You'll also have to pay a late registration fee.
Please Note: Beginning February 1, 2008, traditional paper billing statements for tuition and fees will no longer be generated and mailed by the University. From this point forward, all account statements will be sent via e-mail on a monthly basis. Please be sure to check your University-assigned e-mail regularly. (http://www.uky.edu/Registrar/feesgen.htm)
To avoid cancellation of your Fall class registration, remember to check e-mail regularly and pay your Fall tuition by the deadline. If you register for classes but are not going to return to UK, you need to officially withdraw through the Registrar's Office.
Advising Appointments
Use the electronic calendar to schedule an advising appointment or arrange by phone or email for those advisors without an electronic calendar. Calendar address: http://dobson.ca.uky.edu/advising/. After your session, take your registration worksheet, which your advisor signs, to N-8 Ag North and ask to have your advising hold removed.
Changes in Requirements for 2005 Agricultural Economics Major
Effective Fall 2005, the department enacted changes in the requirements of the agricultural economics major which took effect this summer. The major change establishes two program options within the major:
  1. Agribusiness Management and Marketing
  2. Agricultural Economics

Check the Agricultural Economics "Requirements" section for the requirements within each of these two options. Some changes of note are:

  1. Reduces credits of Agricultural Economics requirements in the major from 28 to 25 hours
  2. Reduces Specialty Support requirements from 27 to 21 credits
  3. Requires a minimum grade of "C" in the required core courses of AEC 302, 303, 305, and the capstone course which is AEC 422 in the Agribusiness option or AEC 490 in the Agricultural Economics option.
  4. Reduces total credits for graduation from 128 to 120.
  5. Requires students in the Agribusiness Management option to complete the Minor in Business. These business courses count toward the Specialty Support requirements. (see "Minor in Business")
Who is Eligible to Take the Old Program?
Students declaring a major in Agricultural Economics prior to the summer or fall 2004 semesters may choose to complete either the old or the new degree requirements for graduation. Students who were already in the old program may choose to complete the new degree program but they must satisfy all of the requirements of the new program (e.g. including a grade of "C" or better in the core courses). Students declaring or beginning a major in Agricultural Economics during the during the 2004 summer/fall semesters or later must complete the new degree requirements.

Note: When you meet with your advisor, he/she may be using a new web-based advising aid called APEX which automatically puts all of your currently earned course credits into the Agri Econ degree requirement format, similar to the Ag Econ Plan of Study. Be aware that it is putting your courses within the requirements of the new agricultural economics program and not the old program. If you are eligible to graduate under the old program and if it is advantageous for you to do so, be sure to mention that to your advisor so your graduation requirements can be adjusted from what was printed for you from APEX.

Changes in Prerequisites for AEC 422 and AEC 490
The prerequisites for the two capstone courses have changed effective with the 2005 fall semester. A student is required to take one capstone course in either the new or the old Agricultural Economics degree program. The new prerequisites for AEC 422 are AEC 305, Fin 300, MGT 301, MKT 300 and senior standing in the major. The new prerequisites for AEC 490 are AEC 302, 303, 305, ECO 391 and senior standing in the major.
Waiting Lists for Agri Econ Courses
If you find an AEC course is full, check the door to 413 Barnhart and fill out a form to get your name added to the courses waiting list. In most cases, your chances are good of eventually getting enrolled. For questions, see Janene Burke in C. E. Barnhart Bldg, Room 413, 257-7264.
Study Plans
If you are a junior or senior, you need to work with your advisor to complete your Plan of Study . Most advisors will not sign your registration worksheet unless you have completed at least a first draft of a Plan of Study. You'll find information on filling out a Plan of Study at the department's web site.

Recent Changes in University Studies Requirements
Communications
The University Studies Communication requirement has been temporarily suspended.
Natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities requirements:
A student may satisfy these requirements simply by selecting two courses from the approved list of courses.
Cross disciplinary/electives requirements
The cross-disciplinary requirement in the University Studies program has been eliminated. It has been replaced by a free elective requirement where the student takes six credits of elective courses from within the university but with no more than three hours from within the student's major. Many agricultural economics students have elected to take AEC 101 for the first three hours of this requirement.
Pass-Fail
"An undergraduate student above the freshman level and not on academic probation may select a maximum of four elective courses, with certain restrictions, to be taken on a Pass-Fail basis". (See UK Bulletin for more detail). "Elective" means the course only counts for graduation if it falls in the elective column of the student's Plan of Study. Courses taken for University studies, college, pre-major, major, or specialty support may not be taken on a Pass-Fail basis.
Repeat Option
"An undergraduate student has the option to repeat once as many as three different completed courses with only the grade, credit hours, and quality points for the second completion used in computing the student's academic standing and credit for graduation. ... A student exercising the repeat option must notify in writing the dean of the college in which he or she is enrolled. A student may exercise the repeat option at any time prior to graduation."
AEC 399 - Experiential Education
If you have a part-time job or an internship where your work is degree related, you might qualify for experiential education credits (EXP 396 or AEC 399). Check with Janene Burke, 413 Barnhart Bldg, for guidelines and instructions for completing a learning contract. A learning contract must be completed and signed by the student within the first two weeks of the internship and turned in to Dr. Mary Marchant, 314 Barnhart.
ACE 102 and SOC 101
Please be aware that a student can not earn credit in both ACE 102 (formerly RSP 102) and SOC 101. VIP will allow you to register for both courses, but you will not earn credit for the second of the two courses nor will you earn credit toward your degree.
