Biochemical and Molecular Insights from
Studies of Plant-Pathogen Interactions

My laboratory is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms that plants use to defend themselves from microbial pathogens. For many years, and like many laboratories, we have focused our attention on how plants regulate the biosynthesis of antimicrobial phytoalexins. Our work has utilized a wide range of experimental strategies including genetic engineering, structure-function comparisons of genes and proteins, and most recently, very simple physiological experiments to uncover putative signal molecules.
