Investigation of the physiological basis of the production of yield by soybean and other grain crops is my interest.  The goal of my research is to aid the development of higher yielding cultivars or management systems that produce higher yields or lower costs.  I also study the effect of the production environment on seed germination and vigor and the relationship between seed vigor and seedling emergence.

My new research project will focus on organic grain cropping systems.  Many challenges stand in the way of successful organic grain crop production, and our project is actively looking for ways to meet those challenges.

Areas of my research include applied field research in grain crop management including corn, soybeans, wheat, grain sorghum, and canola.

Our program is currently involved in studying physiological processes at the leaf and canopy level that may have an impact not only on plant primary productivity but also on yield.  We have been specifically studying soybean isolines with variation in genes involved in flowering and maturity.

My research focus is applied, field-based research in corn, soybean and small grain production systems. In addition, I provide oversight of the corn variety testing program.
