Goals of my Extension Program

To educate dairy farmers, industry personnel, veterinarians, and county extension agents on the fundamentals of dairy nutrition and management.  Specifically, my extension program strives to help Kentucky dairy farmers improve:

  1. Quality and quantity of forages fed to Kentucky cattle.
  2. Implementation and management of dairy feeding programs for the milking herd.
  3. Understanding of nutrition concepts.
  4. Feeding and management programs for heifers and dry cows.

Major Programs for Dairy Farmers

  • Dairy Profits Project: Project herds are provided with advise on how to improve their efficiency and profitability.
  • Managing the Nutrition Program for the Milking Herd: These one-day workshops help farmers reexamine how they manage their feeding programs to effectively utilize available time, labor and economics.  These workshops are taught through the use of mini-scenarios. 
  • Dairy Feeding and Management Clinics: These clinics help farmers critically evaluate their feeding and management programs as it relates to forage quality, body condition of cows, and nutritional adequacy of diets actually consumed.
