What Degree Options are Available?
High school graduates
are eligible for admission to the equine
production option to obtain a B.S. degree in Animal
Sciences. This degree emphasizes the management and production
of horses. Students interested in pursuing a career in Veterinary
Medicine may choose this program while completing their
pre-veterinary requirements. Students already possessing
a B.S. degree may apply for admission to graduate program.
Students in the graduate program work towards a Master of
Science (M.S.) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree
in equine nutrition or a related area.
Does UK teach riding courses?
The University of Kentucky does not offer any courses in
riding, but there are many riding stables in the Lexington
area. UK does have an Equestrian Team, which is a club sport
activity. The Department of Animal Sciences has about 60
horses, mostly broodmares and foals that are used in the
equine courses in animal sciences. Hands-on experience is
available in laboratories, through part-time work at the
horse farm and through internships at many of the local
breeding farms and training establishments.

with horses is extremely easy.
What Kinds of Career Opportunities
are Available? Graduates
of the Department of Animal Sciences are successful in many
areas including: horse farm management, equine sales and
marketing, equine organization management, veterinary medicine,
equine feed sales and manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and
horse training. Students can learn about career options
through the many part-time employment opportunities or internships
in the Lexington-area horse industry.

College of Agriculture has people that can help answer questions
about horse nutrition, horse diseases, pasture management,
horse facilities and many other equine-related areas. To
