EXTENSION PROGRAMS

Mastitis Control and Milking Management

Educational programs including meetings, field days and on farm consultations are conducted. A Total Quality Management program is implemented on farms. This invloves setting up an external management team that meets on a regular basis to provide advise to the dairy producer on ways to improve milk quality and dairy income.

Dairy Expansion

Educational assistance is provided to producers expanding their dairy businesses or to those people starting new dairy businesses. Recommendations are made on remodelling buildings, building layout and new facilities. The Sustainable Dairy Systems manual is used to create budgets for proposed changes. The Finpack Financial Analysis program is used to analyze financial projections for farms. Expansion workshops for producers and industry have been conducted.

Milk Marketing and Outlook

County Agriculture Extension agents are kept current on milk prices, dairy marketing and dairy outlook through the monthly Dairy Notes. Marketing information is provided to farmers and industry personnel through presentations at meetings and news releases.

USDA in cooperation with the University of Kentucky is conducting a DAiry Options Pilot Program (DOPP) to teach dairy producers risk management.
