Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Weckman holds a B.S. degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Kansas State University, an M.A. degree in Communications from University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication from University of Minnesota.  He joined the Department of Agricultural Public Information at University of Kentucky in 1973 as an Extension specialist.  He remained in that unit through 2002, when the Department of Community and Leadership Development was initiated.  While in the Agricultural Public Information Department (later renamed Agricultural Communications), he began teaching the first courses in agricultural communication at University of Kentucky to undergraduate students, in an individualized curriculum.  As a result of continued student interest in the major, it now is an established major with about 85 undergraduate students enrolled.

While at the Department of Agricultural Communications, Dr. Weckman served as press section leader and later as marketing and public relations section leader.  He wrote for the mAgazine, and was recognized for his efforts with several national awards.

He joined the newly created Department of Community and Leadership Development in 2002, where his appointment is 51 percent Extension and 49 percent teaching.  His Extension appointment includes writing for the mAGazine and Extension Today and providing training for Extension agents.  A distance education class, CLD 675, also is part of his Extension appointment.  His teaching appointment includes advising half of the 85 undergraduate students in the major, teaching CLD 320, CLD 485, CLD 490 and CLD 395.  He serves on both graduate and undergraduate committees for the department and is a full member of the graduate faculty.
