Turner Leadership Academy

The Turner Leadership Academy (TLA) was created to provide a structured framework through which undergraduate students in the College of Agriculture can enhance their leadership skills and receive a certificate in leadership while earning their degree. It is a not-for-credit, voluntary program designed to meet the needs of each individual student who participates – introducing leadership concepts to those who have had little or no exposure to leadership development, to building upon existing leadership skills and experiences for those who have been leaders in high school and/or are leaders here on campus. This program is intended to be flexible and provides each student with a mentor who guides each participant towards completion of a Leadership Development Plan and a leadership portfolio.

The purpose of the program is to:

  • Prepare students for the workforce by providing a structured leadership experience that engages them in four general areas of leadership development:

    • Personal leadership

    • Interpersonal leadership

    • Group and Organizational leadership

    • Community leadership and engagement

  • Assist students with intentionally planning their leadership journey earlier in their careers.

  • Increase the number of students engaged in leadership development, especially those who may not view themselves as leaders.

  • Enhance students’ skills to be productive team members and organizational and community leaders.

  • Increase the percent of graduates with the competencies to become active citizens in their communities.

  • Create some visible added-value incentive to students to stretch themselves.

    This web site provides individuals and organizations an online portal to leadership development training opportunities offered by local non-profit organizations in the Central Kentucky Region. Partners on the Let’s Lead site offer programs that build individual, organizational and community leadership capacities. 

    The intention of this partnership is to:
         a.  enhance the skills of youth and adults to become engaged citizens and leaders
         b.  identify the community-based organizations that offer leadership
              development training for adults and youth in the Lexington/Fayette County area
         c.  assess the types of leadership training opportunities currently available and to
                identify gaps in training
         d.  move toward a collaborative approach to growing leaders in our community.

     The Center for Leadership Development hosts the Let’s Lead Site.

    Nonprofit Leadership Initiative

    Our mission is to serve, support and strengthen the nonprofit sector in our Commonwealth. The Initiative provides quality programs and services that encourage nonprofit collaboration, effectiveness, accountability and innovation to strengthen our communities.

    The Nonprofit Leadership Initiative provides excellent training and educational events for Kentucky's nonprofit professionals.

    We have something for everyone! Whether you're a seasoned executive or new to the nonprofit sector, check out our workshop schedule to find events that meet your educational needs.

    Also take a look at our Lunch and Learn schedule. Lunch and Learn is designed for busy professionals interested in networking and discussing current topics over lunch.

    The Initiative proudly hosts the annual Kentucky Nonprofit Leadership Forum - the only statewide gathering of nonprofit leaders in Kentucky. Held each fall, the Forum is quickly becoming the "not to miss" event for nonprofit staff and volunteers.

    The Nonprofit Leadership Initiative is proud to introduce Board Link, a comprehensive effort to strengthen the governing boards of Kentucky’s nonprofit organizations.   Because small and large nonprofits alike typically do not devote the necessary time to board recruitment and development, the Board Link program incorporates training, matching, and consulting services designed to strengthen your governing board of directors and your organization.

    Contact the Nonprofit Leadership Initiative for assistance customized to fit the needs of your organization. Experienced faculty and staff from various University of Kentucky units in cooperation with recognized professionals in the field of nonprofit leadership are available to provide guidance and expertise to your organization. The Nonprofit Leadership Initiative can assist your organization with:

    • board self-assessment,

    • fiscal management,

    • fund development,

    • program evaluation,

    • and other management issues.
