Biography

Daniel A. Potter

    Daniel A. Potter, Professor of Entomology at the University of Kentucky, has studied and taught about the biology and environmentally rational management of turf and landscape insects since 1979. He received his B.S. degree from Cornell University in 1974, and his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1978. Dr. Potter's lab is among the world's primary research groups studying urban landscape entomology. He has published >150 refereed scientific papers, mostly with students, about 20 invited book chapters, two Annual Reviews, dozens of trade journal articles, and the 1998 textbook "Destructive Turfgrass Insects: Biology, Diagnosis, and Control." Dr. Potter has been Keynote Speaker at Scientific and Green Industry conferences throughout the world. His research has been funded by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, U.S. Golf Association, International Society of Arboriculture, O.J. Noer Foundation, Horticultural Research Institute, American Floral Endowment, and other sources.

Dr. Potter teaches ENT 320 (Horticultural Entomology), an annual 3-credit undergraduate course with lab, and ENT/BIO 625 (Insect-Plant Relationships), a bi-annual 3-credit graduate course. He also has taught ENT 110 (Insect Biology for non-majors), as well as several graduate seminars. He has served as Major Professor for 34 graduate students and on the Advisory Committee for about 60 others.

Dr. Potter has received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Urban Entomology, the Distinguished Achievement Award in Horticultural Entomology, and the Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching from the Entomological Society of America (ESA), as well as Research, Teaching, and Service to Graduate Students Awards from the University of Kentucky. His students have received numerous recognitions including three winners of the ESA J.H. Comstock Graduate Student Award, the ESA Award for Leadership in Applied Entomology, the GCSAA Watson Fellowship, and six winners of the Outstanding Graduate Student Award in the UK College of Agriculture. His former students include eight University faculty members; others are leaders in extension, regulatory entomology, and Industry.
