Dr. Barnes is the Kentucky
state Extension Wildlife Specialist and a full professor in the Department of
Forestry at the University
of Kentucky. He holds his doctorate in wildlife &
fisheries sciences from Texas A&M University,
a master of science in wildlife & fisheries science from South Dakota State
University, and a Bachelor of Arts,
Magna Cum Laude, from Huron College in South
Dakota. Dr.
Barnes has been on the Department of Forestry faculty at the University of Kentucky for 20 years and is an
internationally published, award-winning author and photographer. During this
tenure he has published more than 35 research papers, 48 extension
publications and more than 60 regional and national magazine articles. He has supervised numerous graduate
students and his research emphasis focuses on using herbicides to restore
native grasslands. More information

area of protecting biodiversity, urban wildlife conservation, and wildlife

Tom is the author and photographer of the number one
regional best selling and Kentucky Literary Award nominated Kentucky’s Last Great Places. Other notable books written and
photographed include the popular Gardening
For The Birds and his latest, The
Wildflowers and Ferns of Kentucky.
Dr. Barnes most recent book is in the publication process and is
tentatively titled Rare Wildflowers of Kentucky. He is also the author of the award winning
publication: Private Lands Wildlife Management and Technical Guidance
Manual. Dr. Barnes is a commissioned
Kentucky Colonel and is a member of Leadership Kentucky Class of 2000. He has received numerous awards including
Outstanding New Extension Specialist, M.D. Whitaker Award for Outstanding
Extension Specialist, First Annual KY Biodiversity Award, Outstanding
Volunteer for the KY Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, The Enrichment Award
for the Garden Clubs of Kentucky. He is listed in multiple Who’s Who
publications such as 2000 Intellectuals of 21st Century, 500
Leaders of Influence, 2000 Leaders of Science, Technology, and Engineering,
and 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century. He was named an ABI Man of the Year in
2001.
Dr. Barnes is also an accomplished photographer and his
photographs have been used in magazines, calendars, books, publications, web
sites and for corporate uses throughout the world including Canada, Germany,
Japan, Australia, Great Brittan, Africa, and the United States. His photographs have been published in such
United States
magazines as Highways, The Horse, Land & Water, Forest Landowner, Blue
Ridge Magazine, Wild Neighbor News, Erosion Control, The Wildlife Society
Bulletin, and Native Plant Journal.
More than 700 of his images appear on the plants.usda.gov and University of Tennessee web pages. His photos have also been used by the
National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, USDA NRCS, US Fish & Wildlife
