My extension wildlife and natural resources management program reflects my attitude about assisting people by providing information to help them make better decisions about resource management issues, solve a wildlife damage problem, or make the world and environment a better place for humanity. My programmatic focus is in three primary arenas: Wildlife Damage Management, Urban Wildlife Conservation, and the Conservation of Biodiversity. Within each programmatic area I typically provide information via Extension Publications, magazine articles, mass media releases, web sites, applied research programs and publication in appropriate journals, and on-location presentations. My primary mission is to provide unbiased scientific based information to our county faculty, the agriculture and natural resources agents, family and consumer science agents, and 4-H/youth agents located in every Kentucky County. However, I reach out to a variety of audiences including Master Gardeners, Garden Clubs, Agencies, Industry, NGO's, Schools, and of course the general public.
The broad general goals of my extension program are to
1. Increase the knowledge, understanding, and importance of wildlife and biodiversity conservation to foster appropriate stewardship of our natural wildland resources.
2. Create an awareness of wildlife habitat requirements and the importance of conserving biodiversity so that the general public can gain an understanding of why it is important to manage natural resources to benefit future generations.
3. Encourage the appropriate use of habitat management in both rural and urban environments to benefit both wildlife and humans.
4. Encourage the restoration or rehabilitation of degraded habitats and ecosystems or the development of wildlife habitat whenever possible.
5. Create an awareness of the impact of invasive organisms on wildlife and wildlife habitat.
6. Increase the public's ability to identify wildlife species that come into conflict with humans creating a nuisance, property damage, or health concerns and to encourage the use of integrated wildlife damage management principles to solve those problems.
7. Create an awareness of farm and home management practices that reduce the potential for human-wildlife conflicts.
