Horse Genomics 1995 - 2007
DNA from the International Horse Reference Family Panel for Linkage Mapping

This is a resource for building the linkage map for the horse. Paternal half-sib families were chosen as the basis for the International Horse Reference Family Panel (IHRFP). There are 13 reference families with between 21 and 52 offspring for each family for a total of 494 offspring. Informative meioses for dams are not included in the analysis.

DNA was isolated at the laboratory of origin using different but commonly accepted methods. The workshop requirement was that the DNA be of sufficient quality for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and sufficient quantity for testing many markers (milligram quantities). Each laboratory is provided with 5 micrograms of DNA for testing.

Each laboratory using this resource should commit to testing at least 5 polymorphic markers against the reference family. All sires must be tested for each marker and all offspring of heterozygous stallions must be tested. Scientists may report the results of testing and linkage analysis with appropriate acknowledgement of the workshop sponsors (Dorothy Russell Havemeyer Foundation, Inc. and USDA-NRSP8) for providing the resources.
