IntroductionDuring the winter of 2001, fruit and vegetable producers in Kentucky were surveyed about their marketing practices. This survey was conducted as part of a multi-state project to analyze and compare produce marketing in Kentucky and four other southeastern states. An extensive effort was made to survey only current fruit and vegetable producers in Kentucky. Names and addresses were obtained from the certified farm market list of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the four vegetable marketing co-ops in Kentucky. In addition, each county extension office was asked to provide names and addresses of current fruit and vegetable producers in each county. A total of 940 surveys were mailed, with a follow-up thank you/reminder post card following two weeks after the mailing. Over 40% (385) of the producer surveys were returned. Over 34% (323) of the total surveys mailed were available for analysis. The remaining surveys returned (62 or 6.5%) represented addresses where produce was not marketed in 2001. This Web Site will be the initial means for reporting the results of the 2001 Kentucky Produce Marketing Practices Survey. Data summaries will be posted here throughout February/March to inform those involved in Kentucky’s produce industry. A final report combining the results of this producer survey with surveys of other segments of the produce industry in Kentucky will be forthcoming. |
