Eastern hemlock is frequent in Eastern Kentucky, where it is approaching its limit in southern range. It is a shade-tolerant evergreen preferring moist mountain ravines. It is commonly associated with white pine and rhododendron groves. The Kentucky champion tree is in Harlan County and is more than 140 feet tall.
